Soon after they moved into their dream home five years ago, Carol Ann Stutte and her partner of 16 years began receiving death threats, she said Monday.
Those menacing warnings from a neighbor grew more frequent this summer, she said.
“Toward the end, the neighbor said, ‘I’m going to burn your house down, and I’m going to kill you.’
“She also told us what she called a joke: ‘What’s better than one dead queer? Two dead queers.’ “
On the fifth anniversary of their move, the couple was celebrating with dinner in Nashville when they received a phone call: Their home was in flames.
Driving to the still-smoldering scene off Citico Road, Stutte said she saw one word spray-painted on the side of their detached garage: “Queers.”
The Sept. 4 incident is under investigation by state and local officials as a possible arson and hate crime.
